Two classes of odors
Organic – anything living
Offensive when rot, decay or combustion occurs
Indicates an unclean, unhealthy condition
Organic Odor Sources
◦ Blood, Urine, Feces, Vomit
◦ Mold, Mildew, Fungi
◦ Soil, Fertilizer
◦ Cooking oils, meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, bread
◦ Combusted organic matter
Basic Steps to Organic Odor Removal
1. Find the source
2. Clean the source
3. Deodorize the source
4. In some cases disinfect the location
5. When all else fails remove the source
Malodor Removal
Deodorizer products are classified by what they do or do not do to an odor. The product used should always be
based on the type—source of the odor for effective odor control. Odors can be classified into two broad
categories: Chemical Odors and Organic Odors.
Absorbents (Chemical and Organic Odors)
Absorb odor molecules from the air into themselves
Biocides (Organic Odors)
Kill or inhibit growth of odor causing microbes
Encapsulant (Chemical and Organic Odors)
Coat the odor and set up a barrier preventing the odor from returning
Enzymes (Organic Odors)
Break down odor molecules through catalytic action making complex molecules simple molecules
Molecular Modifiers (Chemical and Organic Odors)
Change the physical structure of the odor into non offensive molecules
Neutralizers (Chemical Odors)
Stop “Off – Gassing”
Oxidizers (Organic Odors)
Speed up the decomposition of organics
Masking Agents (Chemical and Organic Odors)
Add perfumes providing a pleasing scent

Fragrance Tips
Fragrances mask odors, some are generally pleasant to most people and some play a role in specifically masking unpleasant odors. Citrus and Orange mask the odor of burned or rotting meat. Cherry masks male urine, Floral masks female urine while Mint masks the odor of mold and mildew. Using the wrong fragrance can sometimes intensify an odor problem.
