Are rug doctor carpet cleaning machines good for stains?
My carpet has several stains from oil/grease from an office chair that was on the carpet, there are about 50 little round black stains and am wondering if the rug doctor cleaning machineswould work to get these stains out of my carpet? because I’m not sure if these machines are just for general cleaning of carpets or if they get stains out?

Are the carpet cleaning machines you can rent any good?
I have one big stain on my carpeting I need to get out but mostly I’d like to just freshen it up to get rid of any odors (I have two dogs) and keep it nice-looking. Are the machines you can rent at the grocery store easy to use and are the results worth the trouble? I don’t have a ton of carpeting, just the living room, dining room and stairs.
I had it done professionally by Coit a year ago when we moved into the house. .

If you have two dogs, I think its time to invest in your own machine. I have two Saint Bernard’s and can not imagine not having my Hoover spin brush . I found owning I used it more, and did not have the hassle of going and getting it, returning it etc. My spin brush ( hoover ) does just as good a job as the Rug doctor , if not better. It will pay for itself very quickly. Plus you can use it on other floor types.

What is the biggest reason that people rent carpet cleaning machines. Is it cost, convenience, time, etc?
Just curious why so many people try to clean their own carpets instead of hiring a professionalcarpet cleaner,

Good question, it makes no sense to me. It’s not time, as I know it takes three times as long with a portable hot water extractor a.k.a. “steam cleaner” to clean carpets as it takes me with my “Truck Mounted” steam cleaning system and a quarter of the drying time. Cost ? I doubt it, buy the time you drive to pick up a machine, rent it, buy those inferior cleaning solutions, de-foamers, stain removers etc… That really don’t work that well for an outrages price per unit, then drive home, spend your day trying to clean and dry your over wet carpets, I could clean 3 bedrooms, Lr, Dr, hall and stairs in 11/2 to 2 hrs dry within 4 hrs with a real steam system. What could be more convenient than that? I think people just feel the will save money if they do it themselves, same for most home projects.

What is the difference between carpet cleaning machines: steaming, shampooing, or other types?
Carpet Cleaner answers:
Steaming uses heated water and suction to extract dirt. It will use an agent that helps the dirt release from the fiber, but it is not a foaming soap.
Shampooing uses cold or hot water, a foaming soap, and a rotating brush. It may or may not suction the remaining water back out of the carpet.
Dry cleaning uses a dry chemical and vacuums it back up like a regular vacuum cleaner. No water involved. Some dry cleaning isn’t actually dry, but uses a chemical like is used on clothing.
Steaming causes the least damage to your carpet, but dry cleaning is the most effective for over all cleaning. Shampooing is hard on the carpet and can leave it looking a little bit matted, but is good for cleaning small spots.
